WELCOME TO METROPOLITAN SWIMMING
U. S. Masters Swimming (USMS) is the National Governing Body that provides the administrative structure for masters (adult) swimming. Membership in USMS is open to individuals age 18 and older, and currently has more than 55,000 registered members throughout the United States. The country is divided into eight regional zones, each comprised of smaller local governing groups called Local Masters Swimming Committees (LMSC). Each LMSC is in turn composed of clubs or teams, and unattached (unaffiliated) swimmers. Our LMSC is Metropolitan, which is part of the Colonies Zone, and governs masters swimming in New York City (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island), Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties), and the Lower Hudson Valley (Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester Counties). The Metropolitan LMSC currently has close to 2,500 members.
As a registered member of USMS, you may choose to join a club or team (see “Places To Swim” website section) to enjoy the camaraderie and structure of a group that swims together in organized workouts under the supervision of a coach. Competition is not required for USMS registration or club/team /workout participation. Less than 35% of all USMS registered members routinely participate in swim competition – most join USMS for health and fitness purposes in a fun and motivating environment with like-minded individuals. But for those who do wish to compete, there are an incredible number of opportunities to set goals and test your skills and conditioning. Pool meets, open water swims, postal and fitness events, and regional, national and international championships (see “Events & Results” website section) are all part of an ambitious USMS swimming program available for all ages and ability levels.
